"Happy wot?"
"Thanksgivin'! It's an American holiday. Accordin' t' Lisa, families gather for a big dinner and give thanks for all the-"
"On a Thursday?"
"What?"
"T'day's Thursday."
"Yes..."
"Who has a holiday on a Thursday?"
"The Americans, apparently. Anyway, she says-"
"Is it always on a Thursday?"
"I dunno. I'll ask her next time I write."
"Good, 'cos Thursday's a weird day t' have a holiday on. Wot do they do about work?”
“What d’ you mean?”
“I mean, wot about school an' work an' stuff? D' the kids get just t’day off’r d’ they get Friday too’r wot? ‘cos it seems pretty silly t’ me t' get a day off only t' have t' come back for one day an' then go home again for the weekend. I wouldn't be very thankful for such an interruption, if I were an American."
"Lisa said they get all week off school."
"A whole week? For bein' thankful?"
"Hey, it's very important t' take time out t' be properly appreciative've what you've got! That's why she says they all go around the table b'fore they eat and each names somethin' they're thankful for."
"Like wot, Arithmancy or the ability t' wank?"
"You're such a pervert! I'm gonna tell Mum you said that!"
"Mum's not here now, is she? An' you didn't answer me question."
"I'll write her. An' no, I think it's got t' be important stuff, like-"
"Both've those're important. Especially the latter."
"Boys. No, really important stuff, like family an' friends an' havin' enough t' eat an'-"
"But that's borin' t' talk about. An' depressin'."
"It's not! I think it's really nice that they have a day to remind themselves and teach their kids that there are people less fortunate than them in the world."
"I doubt the kids're learnin' that particular lesson."
"You just don't think-"
"No, hear me out. It might be good if everyone properly reflected an' such like you're sayin' but how many people under the age've seventy d' you know who'd do that? I'm sure loads've kids actually haven't thought beyond 'm thankful for me new bike 'cos it's loads better'n Billy's an'-"
"You brought up wankin' as somethin' t' be thankful for!"
"Shush. 'm thinkin' aloud here. Anyway, the parents probably chuckle an' go And your family and friends, right Sam? an' little Sammy'll probably grin an' nod an' not mean a word've it an' the adults'll all smile an' laugh 'cos they remember wot it was like t' be his age an' all he'll've learned is that its ok t' be completely materialistic like that an' that it's not really important t' value those thin's 'cos everybody's laughin' an' people don't laugh at the important thin's an' that's how you end up with a world full've people who don't care- they've learned that there's always someone else who'll think've those important thin's so they can be selfish all they want 'cos that's the role they've been raised for, innit? That's why the world's in such trouble- no one really gives a damn any more 'cos their parents taught 'em it's completely acceptable t' only pretend t' give a damn an'-"

"Wot?"
"You're ramblin', both our friends've wandered off, an' I stopped listenin' t' you ages ago. I've got Transfiguration in ten minutes so I've got t' go."
"Oh. Well... see, that just fits in with wot I was sayin'- not even you, me own sister, actually cares enough t' listen t'-"
"Myron!"
"Wot?"
"I've got t' go. Happy Thanksgivin'!"
