Two years, seven months, and eleven days. That's how long Myron had been waiting to share this with his sister. Oh, she'd been here for longer than that, but today was special. Besides, he knew this would be the first time she actually paid attention to the non-terrestrial offerings of the Astronomy tower since... well, probably ever. You see, Elmira was pretty much the exact opposite of her older brother- pretty, social, adept at dealing with members of the opposite sex- and it was rare to find something the two siblings had in common. This, he hoped, would prove to be one of the few things they could share.
She was late- a good half hour, if his watch was to be believed, though he wasn't sure he did since the thing had been acting up for the past few months. Professor Flitwick had noticed some of its antics during one of their weekly meetings and had told him that it might be because Myron himself was antsy about finishing. He'd scoffed at the idea at the time- he couldn't wait to get out of there- but now that he had only the open expanse of the Scottish night sky to gainsay him, he found himself unable to deny that there may have been a shred of truth to what his favorite professor had said. He was nervous about leaving- almost as much as he had been about starting, truth be told- if only because he'd learned what to expect from the students here and no two places are exactly alike which meant he'd have to completely relearn the social structure of his new surroundings. It'd taken him three years before he felt like he really understood Hogwarts' and he wasn't sure he had that much time to waste at uni. On the other hand, he was certain his muggle peers couldn't be any more confusing than his wizarding ones had been so maybe, just maybe, things would be a bit simpler to work out there.
His musings were interrupted by the sound of the door opening behind him. He hurried back, calling for her to wait- it never occurred to him that it could be anyone else- and cracked the door just enough to see her. She started to ask what was going on when he interrupted her with instructions to close her eyes. There were weak protests at first but he refused to budge until she did as he asked, at which point he opened the door and led her out after an admonishment to keep them closed. She sighed irritably as her brother directed her to turn this direction and tilt up her face that way and she soon felt the need to warn him, "This'd better be good. They've organized a party in the common room and it just wouldn't do for the guest of honor t' be late so you'd better hurry up and show me whatever it is you're too embarrassed t' give me in public so I can hurry up and get back down there." Her short speech ended, yet he said nothing, clearly still waiting for something. She crossed her arms and sighed loudly again, but he remained silent until she demanded, "Well? Can I open me eyes now?" at which point he told her she could, so long as she looked at what she was facing instead of him. "As if I'd stare at me ugly brother instead of me present," she groused, opening her eyes. "Now what- my God, it's full of stars. It's just like that painting of Mum's..." she trailed off, staring up in wonder.
"I know," Myron said as he came up beside her. He'd hung back so as to keep from distracting her but now that she'd had her initial response he felt it was ok to intrude. "I saw it an' remembered how much you liked that one an' how sad you were when she sold it an' that's what made me think t' brin' you up here." He turned away shyly- he'd never been good at showing emotions, even around his family- and only looked back at her when he felt a pair of arms snake around his waist and her head rest against his chest. He stiffened slightly, unused to physical contact since his family had never really been ones to hug, but she stayed put and eventually he wrapped his arms around her shoulders in an awkward hug.
They remained that way in silence for what seemed like hours before she murmured, "I love me housemates, I really do, but they just don't understand about thin's like this." She pulled back just enough to stare up at him as she softly whispered, "Thanks, My-my."
He looked away again, this time to hide a large grin, and gently pushed her towards the door, reminding her that if she didn't hurry, she might miss her party. She pulled a face at him and went to leave but his voice made her pause just as she reached the door. "Happy birthday, Ellie."
